Frequently Asked Welding Questions
We’ve put together a list of the most common welding queries—covering materials, processes, compliance, and how we work with clients.
What does “coded welder” mean?
A coded welder is a welder who has passed a practical qualification test to a specified procedure (WPS) under an approved standard (e.g., ISO 9606 for steel).
It proves the welder can repeatedly produce compliant welds for the material, process, and position required.
We work to documented WPS/WPQRs, so your work is traceable and compliant.
Do you offer mobile/on-site welding?
Yes. Our CSCS-certified welders carry out on-site welding across Leeds and the UK.
We provide RAMS/method statements, bring suitable equipment, and coordinate with your site team on permits, power, and working-at-height requirements.
Ideal for repairs, modifications, and installations.
What welding process is best for my job?
We choose the process based on material, thickness, access, finish, and speed.
- MIG/MAG: fast and consistent for mild/stainless steel frames, brackets, and general fabrication.
- TIG: ultra-clean, precise, and neat—ideal for stainless and aluminium, especially thin sections where heat must be controlled.
- Stick (SMAW): robust and tolerant outdoors; great for heavy sections and site repairs with limited access.
- Brazing/Soldering: joins dissimilar metals or heat-sensitive parts when fusion welding isn’t suitable.
Do you weld aluminium and stainless steel?
Yes. We routinely weld aluminium and stainless steel.
- Aluminium: typically TIG for clean control; MIG for productivity on suitable gauges. Cleanliness and correct shielding gas are critical.
- Stainless: TIG for visible seams and hygiene-critical areas; MIG for productivity. We can pickle/passivate stainless steel after welding to restore corrosion resistance if required.
What finishes can you provide after welding?
We offer:
- Grinding & blending for neat, flush joints
- Bead blasting for uniform texture
- Pickling & passivation for stainless
- Powder coating or wet paint (wide RAL range)
- Hot-dip galvanising for outdoor durability
We’ll advise how each finish affects tolerances, appearance, lead time, and maintenance.
How do you control heat and minimise distortion?
We build quality in from the start:
- Process selection and parameters tuned to the job.
- Fixtures & Jigs for alignment and repeatability
- Sequence Planning (tack, back-step, stagger) to spread heat.
- Interpass temperature control; purging for stainless; preheat on thick sections if needed.
- Post-weld dressing where a smooth or flush finish is specified.
This results in straighter parts, cleaner finishes, and fewer reworks.
